Games like Mushroom Wars you can play today

This page is written by the team behind Battle of Castles, one of the five games below. We say it here rather than at the bottom. The other games are described from their own store pages, read on 28 October 2026, including the places where they do better than ours.

Mushroom Wars 2 is built on one move: buildings grow troops on their own, and you send them to take the buildings you do not own yet. On top of that come heroes, defences and a long campaign. If you want that move somewhere else, in a browser, on a PC, or with a friend, here is the short answer:

  • Online, free, in the browser or on Android, with a friend mode (1v1 or 2v2): Battle of Castles.
  • The planet-to-planet classic, free on PC and Mac: Galcon 2.
  • A space version with four races and up to four players: Planets Under Attack.
  • A calm, minimalist game, solo or against friends: Auralux: Constellations.
  • Short solo levels on your phone: State.io.

Play Battle of Castles in your browser: free, no account, nothing to download.

What these games share with Mushroom Wars

All five keep the core of Mushroom Wars: places that produce troops by themselves, and orders that move those troops to take another place. What separates them is where you can play, what it costs, and whether the other side can be a person you know.

1. Battle of Castles: the same move, with towers on the roads

Battle of Castles is a real-time strategy game played in the browser at app.battleofcastles.com, and on Android through Google Play. You start with one castle. Point at a road and your castle sends half its garrison down it, every second, until you call the order off. Neutral castles are there to be taken, and each castle you hold produces troops and experience.

If you liked the towers of Mushroom Wars, you will feel at home: here the defences go on the roads between castles. A tower cuts down the troops that march past it, a wall blocks a road and stops arrows, a catapult pounds the castle across the way. Experience brings levels, and each level gives you a point to spend on a power, up to the super attack, a little like a hero's skill. Mana buys defences or one decisive blow. A 1v1 match lasts nine minutes, a 2v2 twelve, and you never wait for a match. You win by taking every enemy castle, or by holding the most castles when time runs out.

For friends, the game has a code system: create a team, share the code, and either challenge each other one on one or team up for a 2v2. Our guide to playing with a friend walks through it.

Where Mushroom Wars 2 does better: it has heroes to choose from, four tribes, a story campaign with boss fights and matches for up to four players. Battle of Castles has one army, no campaign, and stops at 2v2.

2. Galcon 2: the idea at its simplest

Galcon 2: Galactic Conquest, by Hassey Enterprises, describes itself on Steam as "a demolition derby in space": you send swarms of ships from planet to planet to take the galaxy. It has been on Steam since December 2014, is free there, runs on Windows, Mac and Linux, and Steam lists it with co-op and cross-platform multiplayer.

Pick it if you want the purest version of the idea on a computer: no heroes, no buildings to upgrade, just fleets and timing.

3. Planets Under Attack: Mushroom Wars in space

Planets Under Attack, by Targem Games, published by Topware Interactive, came out on Steam in September 2012 for Windows and Mac. Its page sets the goal as conquering "a galaxy of planets" with one of four races. It has a single-player campaign, skirmish against the computer, a team mode, and 15 multiplayer levels for 2 to 4 players, online or on the same computer. It is paid.

Pick it if you want the closest thing to Mushroom Wars on a computer, with up to four players around one screen.

4. Auralux: Constellations: the minimalist one

Auralux: Constellations, by Grove Street Games and E McNeill, is a minimalist real-time strategy game on Windows on Steam. You start with a single planet, then grow until the whole system is yours, and each constellation adds one new mechanic. Its page adds that you can play against friends in local or online matches. It is paid.

Pick it if you liked the puzzle side of Mushroom Wars more than the fight.

5. State.io: short levels on your phone

State.io, by Azur Games, the publisher of Mushroom Wars 2, is free on Android with ads and in-app purchases. Its Google Play page calls it "an abstract real-time strategy game": you take states on a map by sending troops, level after level, "playing 1v1 on first levels and competing against more opponents on further levels". It asks for a permanent internet connection and says nothing about challenging a friend.

Pick it if you play on your phone in short bursts and want levels rather than matches. We wrote a whole page of games like State.io.

What Battle of Castles does not do

  • No heroes and no campaign. A guided tutorial teaches you the game, then you play matches.
  • No offline play. Every match runs on our servers, so you need a connection.
  • No App Store app. On Android there is the Google Play app; on a computer, the browser.
  • A match takes nine minutes in 1v1 and twelve in 2v2: not a two-minute break.
  • Landscape only on phones.
  • 1v1 and 2v2 only, no four-player free-for-all.
  • No in-game chat. With a friend, use your usual call or messaging app.
