Games like generals.io you can play in your browser
This page is written by the team behind Battle of Castles, one of the six games below. We say it here rather than at the bottom. The other games are described from their own pages, read on 4 and 5 November 2026, including the places where they do better than ours.
generals.io is a free browser game by MUGA Gaming: protect your general, take land on a grid hidden by fog of war, and capture the other generals. It calls itself "fast-paced", and has team games, custom maps, leaderboards and a ranked 1v1 ladder. If you want that feeling in another game, here is the short answer:
- The closest rule, a leader you must not lose: Kiomet.
- Open land, big maps and 1v1 duels: Territorial.io.
- A real-time duel with defences to build: Battle of Castles.
- A small castle war with an economy: Conquesta.io.
- The same conquest on a world map, with alliances: OpenFront.io.
- The turn-based version, closer to Risk: War.app.

1. Kiomet: the King instead of the general
Kiomet is a free browser game with no install and no account. It is a map of towers and roads: you drag from one tower to another to send units, upgrade towers into mines, factories or cities, and make alliances with a handshake. "When your King is captured, you lose the game", which is the rule you already know from generals.io. We wrote a whole page of games like Kiomet.
Pick it if you like protecting a leader, and want a longer game with more to build.
2. Territorial.io: land, and only land
Territorial.io, by Territorial Endeavours, has no grid and no cities: you spread across a map pixel by pixel, balancing growth against attack. Its Google Play page promises rounds that "can finish in less than 5 minutes", big multiplayer battles and one-vs-one duels, and the game names its best 1v1 player on its home screen.
Pick it if you want very short rounds and a big map. See also our page of games like Territorial.io.
3. Battle of Castles: a duel without the fog
Battle of Castles is a real-time strategy game played in the browser at app.battleofcastles.com, and on Android through Google Play. What it shares with generals.io is the duel: you against one opponent, or two against two, and every move is about where to send your army next. You start with one castle. Point at a road and your castle sends half its garrison down it, every second, until you call the order off. Neutral castles are there to be taken, like the cities of generals.io, and each castle you hold produces troops and experience.
What it does not share is the fog: you see the whole map, and the game is about timing and defence rather than about finding the enemy. A tower on a road cuts down the troops that march past, a wall blocks it and stops arrows, a catapult pounds the castle across the way. Experience brings levels, each level gives you a point to spend on a power, up to the super attack, and mana buys defences or one decisive blow.
A 1v1 lasts nine minutes, a 2v2 twelve, and you never wait for a match. You win by taking every enemy castle, or by holding the most castles when time runs out. To play with a friend, create a team and share its code: you can challenge each other or team up. Our guide to playing with a friend walks through it.
Where generals.io does better: the fog of war, the quick reads, seasons and championships, custom maps and a strategy community. Battle of Castles gives you an Elo rating and a rank once you have played a few matches, but it has no seasons and no fog, and a match takes longer.
4. Conquesta.io: castles and an economy
Conquesta.io is a free browser game with no account: "capture resource tiles to grow your economy, spawn units to defend and attack, and be the last castle standing". A match has up to five players, and Quick Join puts you in a live game in seconds.
Pick it if you want the fight of generals.io with an economy to run.
5. OpenFront.io: the same conquest, at scale
OpenFront.io starts you from one spot on a real-world map, and you spread your nation across it, make or break alliances and fight for the whole map. Its lobby shows free-for-all rooms of up to 100 players, team games and a ranked mode. It is in alpha, and it is also sold on Steam.
Pick it if you would like the conquest of generals.io with far more people and some diplomacy. See also our page of games like OpenFront.io.
6. War.app: the board-game side
War.app, formerly Warzone, presents itself as a game for people who like the board game RISK, and says it is not affiliated with its publisher. You play alone or with friends, in the browser, on Android or on iOS, across many maps and custom rules. Many games are played in turns rather than in real time.
Pick it if you like the thinking of generals.io more than its speed.
What Battle of Castles does not do
- No fog of war. You see the whole map.
- No seasons or tournaments. You get an Elo rating and a rank, nothing more.
- A match takes nine minutes in 1v1 and twelve in 2v2: longer than a quick game of generals.io can be.
- No big free-for-all. Matches are 1v1 or 2v2.
- No offline play. Every match runs on our servers, so you need a connection.
- No App Store app. On Android there is the Google Play app; on a computer or an iPhone, the browser.
- Landscape only on phones.
- No in-game chat. With a friend, use your usual call or messaging app.
